Mazda achieved what was thought unachievable, leaving many engineers who had been working on an engine like this for decades in awe.
A technology that would reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% while decreasing the weight of the engine, resulting in an overall faster, cheaper, and controlled drive.
This puts the Mazda Skyactiv Engine above every single Gasoline and Diesel engine in the world; making Mazda the most fuel efficient car producer in the world.
But that’s not the only thing that makes the Mazda Skyactiv G so special…
So, if it was that hard to achieve for the rest of the engineers…how did Mazda manage to do this on its own?
Well, quite frankly, when we examine the mechanism and the compact & combined use of diesel and gas engine mechanism, it doesn’t look too hard to build at all.
Such a simple mechanism to the point that it makes you wonder, why did no one else come up with it?
That is because of Mazda Skyactiv Technology’s philosophy of Jinba Ittai, “the ride and the rider being one”. When the engineers worked on the engine with the philosophy to make the drive a part of the driver’s experience – the prior problems that came with fuel-efficient engines started to make sense with a newer perspective.
Let’s dive deeper into Mazda’s technology!
The first thing was that the 14:1 ratio piston was redesigned to not only trigger combustion with pressure, but with the addition of a spark plug and an injection of fuel to trigger the combustion exactly when it was needed.
The second upgrade was the shape of the piston, which was dome shaped to cover more surface area, resulting in increased combustion with less kinetics and less power.
Better mechanism and dome-shaped piston design were the key ingredients of this engine.
The overall efficiency and effectiveness of Mazda Skyactiv Technology works with both upgrades in place.
But, what if we are to only upgrade the piston shape to achieve more combustion area?
The piston would start knocking which sounds painful to drive and although lots of different piston damages could be caused once the piston starts knocking, only using this upgrade to intentionally knock and then later clearing the knocking with the timed fuel combustion ends up with a smoother experience.
On the other hand, if you use the normal piston with this fuel injection and spark plug upgrade there would be no such damages as seen with knocking.
The only drawback would be decrease in efficiency of the fuel combustion, as the conventional piston would leave vacuum that could’ve been used to compress the mixture of fuel and air.
All that made Mazda Skyactiv Fuel-efficient – but what about the overall performance?
Here’s the engine’s overall anatomy of better performance.
All of this gives us the Nerd-Alert! Let’s move on to the fun part!
Experiencing the Mazda Skyactiv Technology in a drive is somewhat similar to a diesel engine, with a short-term punch of a petrol engine.
Let’s make it simpler to understand, shall we?
When you come to think of it, it feels like a smooth ride of a race car on a track, since the exhaust system to avoid hot air from going in other cylinders is a similar system used in race cars.
So the smooth ride comes from low friction in the engine and the powerful punch in low speed comes from the efficiency of the piston design.
To sum it up, drive Skyactiv as if you’re flying a water-plane just above the water surface.
